How we researched this

We did not test these air fryers in person. This guide combines results from four independent kitchen test labs (Wirecutter, Serious Eats, America’s Test Kitchen and Good Housekeeping), U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall records, manufacturer specs, and owner reports of problems. Every claim links to its source. Our full methodology. Researched and written by the Dudproof editors. Last updated November 1, 2026.

Dud Score

Coming soon

We publish a Dud Score only after its safety, failure-pattern and support inputs are sourced. Progress for each pick is in the Dud Score inputs table below. How the Dud Score works.

PickWhyWatch out for
Best for most peopleNinja Air Fryer Pro 5-qt (AF141)Wirecutter’s 2026 top pick: crispiest fries, best wings, simple physical buttons, no preheat neededCan run hotter than set (about 430°F in Wirecutter’s test); loud; 1-year warranty
Best-browning (tester disagreement)Instant Vortex Plus 6-qtTop pick at Serious Eats and America’s Test Kitchen: fastest, best browning, 5-degree temperature stepsWirecutter liked it less; 4-minute built-in preheat; basket liner can fall out when you flip it
Best if you want to see insideInstant Vortex Plus ClearCook 6-qtGood Housekeeping’s best value; window and light so you can check food without openingSame liner quirk as other Vortex baskets (check before tipping food out)
Best small / budgetNinja AF101 4-qtRecommended by Serious Eats and Good Housekeeping’s earlier picks for small households4 qt feeds 1–2 people; not for whole chickens

Bottom line: if you want the one testers most often agree on for crispiness and ease, get the Ninja Air Fryer Pro. If browning speed and finer temperature control matter more, the Instant Vortex Plus 6-qt won two of the four labs we reviewed.

Where the test labs agree — and where they don’t

They agree on: basket-style air fryers beat most toaster-oven-style models for crispness at this size, and both Ninja and Instant (Vortex) models are strong.

They disagree on the Instant Vortex Plus. Serious Eats tested 42 air fryers and picked the Instant Pot Vortex Plus 6-Quart as best overall for fast, even browning (Serious Eats). America’s Test Kitchen also names the Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart its winner (ATK). Wirecutter, by contrast, chose the Ninja Air Fryer Pro for the crispiest fries and least-soggy nuggets (Wirecutter). Different foods and test protocols likely explain the split — so pick based on what you cook most.

Who each pick is for (and not for)

Ninja Air Fryer Pro 5-qt (AF141) — best for most people

  • For: couples and small families who mostly make fries, wings, nuggets and reheated leftovers and want simple buttons.
  • Not for: anyone cooking delicate foods who needs precise temperatures (it can run hot), or people sensitive to fan noise.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter 2026 top pick; Ninja sells replacement baskets and trays (Wirecutter).

Instant Vortex Plus 6-qt — best browning

  • For: cooks who want 5-degree temperature control and the fastest browning; families of 3–4.
  • Not for: people who hate waiting (it runs a built-in preheat of about 4 minutes) or who tip food out by flipping the basket.
  • Evidence: Serious Eats best overall; ATK winner; ATK notes the basket liner can come loose when the basket is inverted.

Instant Vortex Plus ClearCook 6-qt — best with a window

  • For: people who like to check food without opening the drawer; good value when discounted.
  • Not for: anyone who needs more than 6 qt.
  • Evidence: Good Housekeeping’s best value pick (Good Housekeeping); also recommended by Serious Eats.

Ninja AF101 4-qt — best small

  • For: one or two people, small counters.
  • Not for: families or batch cooking.
  • Evidence: recommended by Serious Eats; Good Housekeeping’s best small pick in an earlier edition of its guide (we haven’t confirmed it’s still listed).

Owner Proof: common complaints and problems to know about

These come from independent testers and owner forums, not from Amazon reviews.

  1. Nonstick coating wear. Owners report flaking or peeling basket coatings on several brands, for example an r/airfryer thread on a Ninja basket and another on a Cosori Dual Blaze. Avoid metal utensils and abrasive scrubbers, and check whether replacement baskets are sold before you buy. (One thread per brand is an anecdote, not a failure rate — see the Dud Score note below.)
  2. Replacement parts can be hard to find. An owner couldn’t find a replacement basket for a 3.7-qt Cosori, and a broken handle is another reported issue. Wirecutter notes Ninja does sell replacement baskets and trays.
  3. Running hotter than the setting. Wirecutter measured the Ninja Pro overshooting to about 430°F.
  4. Noise. Air fryers are fan-driven; Wirecutter calls the Ninja Pro loud, and Serious Eats notes moderate noise from the Vortex Plus.
  5. Basket liners that fall out. ATK flagged this on the Instant Vortex Plus — hold the liner or use tongs instead of flipping.

Dud Alert: recalls to check

We searched all 3,733 CPSC recalls published since 2015 (via the CPSC Recalls API, checked November 1, 2026). None of the four picks above has been recalled. Air fryer recalls you should know about, especially if you’re buying used:

How we researched this guide

Sources used for this guide: Wirecutter (updated June 2026), Serious Eats (updated October 2026; 42 models tested), America’s Test Kitchen, Good Housekeeping Institute; CPSC Recalls API (3,733 recalls since 2015, searched Nov 1, 2026); owner forum threads on r/airfryer; manufacturer product listings.

What we didn’t do: we did not cook with these air fryers ourselves, and we did not use Amazon customer reviews or ratings.

How picks were chosen: we favored models picked by more than one independent lab, then checked for recalls, known failure modes and warranty terms. Full methodology

FAQ

What is the best air fryer in 2026?

For most people, the Ninja Air Fryer Pro 5-qt (AF141), Wirecutter’s 2026 top pick for crisp results and simple controls. Serious Eats and America’s Test Kitchen instead chose the Instant Vortex Plus 6-qt for faster browning, so both are strong choices.

Are Ninja or Instant air fryers better?

Independent labs split. Wirecutter favored Ninja’s Air Fryer Pro for crispiness; Serious Eats and America’s Test Kitchen favored the Instant Vortex Plus 6-qt for browning and finer temperature control. Choose Ninja for simplicity and Instant for precise temperature.

What size air fryer do I need?

About 4 qt for one or two people, 5–6 qt for three or four, and larger or dual-basket models for bigger families.

Have any air fryers been recalled?

Yes. About 2 million COSORI air fryers were recalled in February 2023 for fire and burn hazards, and PowerXL, Insignia, Secura and Magic Chef models have also been recalled. Check your model number at cpsc.gov. None of our picks has been recalled as of November 1, 2026.

Is air fryer nonstick coating safe if it peels?

We haven’t yet found an authoritative food-safety source on this, so we won’t guess. Practically: if a basket’s coating is flaking, contact the manufacturer about a replacement, and before you buy, check whether the brand sells replacement baskets. Wirecutter notes Ninja sells replacements.

Do I need to preheat an air fryer?

It depends on the model. Wirecutter found the Ninja Air Fryer Pro doesn’t need preheating; the Instant Vortex Plus runs a built-in preheat of about 4 minutes.
