How we researched this

We did not test these earbuds in person. This guide combines results from independent testers (Wirecutter, and SoundGuys, which says it has tested more than 300 pairs of wireless earbuds in its lab), hearing-health guidance from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), owner threads on Reddit and the CPSC recall database. Every claim links to its source. Our full methodology. Researched and written by the Dudproof editors. Last updated November 2, 2026.

We publish a Dud Score only after its safety, failure-pattern and support inputs are sourced. Progress for each pick is in the Dud Score inputs table below. How the Dud Score works.

Bottom line: the most common way earbuds become a dud gift is a mismatch: the wrong phone ecosystem or the wrong ear shape. If they use an iPhone, the AirPods Pro 3 are the pick both labs agree on. For Android, or a household with both, Wirecutter’s favorite, the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro, is the safer choice. If sound quality matters most, SoundGuys’ top pick is the Sony WF-1000XM6. For small ears or workouts, get the Sony LinkBuds Fit, and for a stocking stuffer, the EarFun Free 2S.

Where the testers agree — and where they don’t

Both labs agree on AirPods Pro 3 for iPhone. Wirecutter says the AirPods Pro 3 offer better battery life, water resistance and noise cancellation than previous AirPods Pro, with a more secure and comfortable fit, though still “not ideal for hardcore workouts” (Wirecutter). SoundGuys names them its best earbuds for iPhone, reports an average noise reduction of 90%, the best it has ever measured, and measured 8 hours 42 minutes of battery life (SoundGuys).

They split on the overall winner. Wirecutter’s top pick (updated September 11, 2026) is the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro: comfortable, with “fantastic” noise cancellation and what Wirecutter calls the best noise-reducing microphones it has tested, but with shorter battery life than it would prefer (Wirecutter). SoundGuys’ best overall is the Sony WF-1000XM6, citing excellent noise cancelling, sound quality and microphones, and 9 hours 41 minutes of battery in its test. It warns the larger buds may not suit smaller ears (SoundGuys). SoundGuys’ value pick is the older Liberty 4 Pro rather than the 5 Pro.

They split on budget, too. Wirecutter’s budget pick is the EarFun Free 2S (Wirecutter). SoundGuys’ budget pick is the CMF Buds 2 Plus, which it says matched the Sony XM6’s overall sound-quality score in its testing, and it also recommends the EarFun Air Pro 4+ (SoundGuys). We list the Free 2S because it’s the budget pick from the lab whose overall picks we lean on most, and because we could find it on Amazon.

They agree on workouts. Wirecutter’s workout pick is the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 for battery life, clear sound, sweat resistance and a secure fit (Wirecutter), and SoundGuys also names it its best workout earbuds (SoundGuys). We’ll add a buy link once we confirm its Amazon listing.

A repairability footnote. SoundGuys points out that the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 has a user-replaceable battery, though it needs a small screwdriver and proprietary cells (SoundGuys). Almost every other earbud is effectively disposable once its battery fades.

How to choose wireless earbuds that won’t be a dud

  1. Match the phone first. SoundGuys says no other earbuds integrate as deeply with iPhone as the AirPods Pro 3 (SoundGuys), and Wirecutter suggests Android users consider alternatives (Wirecutter). If you don’t know what phone they use, pick a cross-platform model like the Liberty 5 Pro.
  2. Fit beats specs. Most complaints about premium earbuds are about fit (see Owner Proof). For small ear canals, a Wirecutter podcast episode recommends earbuds with a stabilizing wing like the Sony LinkBuds Fit, or an over-ear hook like the Powerbeats Pro 2 (The Wirecutter Show). Try every included tip size.
  3. Calls matter. If they take a lot of calls outdoors, microphones are the reason to pick the Liberty 5 Pro or XM6 (Wirecutter, SoundGuys).
  4. Battery claims are optimistic. SoundGuys’ measured battery life often falls short of the rated figure; for example, it measured 6 hours 17 minutes on the EarFun Air Pro 4+ against a rated 12 hours (SoundGuys). Use lab numbers, not the box.
  5. Over-ear may be better. If they mainly want silence on a plane, our noise-cancelling headphones guide covers over-ear options that are easier to wear for hours.

Protect their hearing

NIDCD says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss, but long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can. It lists listening to music at high volume through earbuds or headphones as a common risk (NIDCD). Good noise cancelling helps, because it means you don’t have to turn the volume up to drown out a train or a plane.

Who each pick is for (and not for)

Apple AirPods Pro 3 — best for iPhone owners

  • For: iPhone users who want noise cancelling, easy switching between Apple devices and health extras.
  • Not for: Android users, or people whose ears didn’t get along with earlier AirPods Pro tips.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s pick for Apple users (Wirecutter); SoundGuys’ best for iPhone, with a 90% average noise reduction and heart-rate, hearing-aid and Live Translation features (SoundGuys).

Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro — best for Android and mixed devices

  • For: Android users, people who take lots of calls, and gift-givers who don’t know which phone the recipient has.
  • Not for: anyone who needs all-day battery from the buds alone.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s top pick for comfort, noise cancelling and microphones (Wirecutter).

Sony WF-1000XM6 — best sound and noise cancelling

  • For: music lovers and frequent travelers on Android or iPhone; LDAC for high-resolution audio on Android.
  • Not for: people with small ears (SoundGuys flags the size).
  • Evidence: SoundGuys’ best earbuds overall, with 9 hours 41 minutes of measured battery and IPX4 water resistance (SoundGuys).

Sony LinkBuds Fit — best secure fit

  • For: small ears, runners and gym-goers who find AirPods-style buds fall out.
  • Not for: anyone who wants the strongest noise cancelling.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s runner-up (Wirecutter), and the alternative Wirecutter suggests for runners, gym regulars, Android users and people with fit trouble (Wirecutter). On Amazon we only found a limited-edition bundle listing, so our button opens a search.

EarFun Free 2S — best budget

  • For: kids, gym bags, backups and stocking stuffers.
  • Not for: frequent flyers who want strong noise cancelling.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s budget pick (Wirecutter). Amazon shows more than one Free 2S listing, so our button opens a search.

Who should skip it

If they wear hearing aids, have sensitive ears or simply dislike things in their ear canal, in-ear buds are a risky gift. Over-ear noise-cancelling headphones are easier on the ears. And if they already own a recent pair that works, an upgrade rarely changes much: one AirPods Pro 3 owner in SoundGuys’ owner section says the sound isn’t a big upgrade over the Pro 2 (SoundGuys).

Owner Proof: common complaints and problems to know about

These come from owner forums and testers, not from Amazon reviews.

  1. AirPods Pro 3 that won’t stay in. An r/airpods owner says chewing, talking or moving their head makes the AirPods Pro 3 work their way out, blames the stiffer foam-core tips, and says they tried every tip size (r/airpods thread). Wirecutter also says the fit still isn’t ideal for hardcore workouts (Wirecutter). Keep the gift receipt.
  2. A hiss only the owner hears. Another r/airpods owner reports a high-pitched hiss and squeak in new AirPods Pro 3 that friends couldn’t hear (r/airpods thread). Contact Apple support within the return window if this happens.
  3. Liberty 5 Pro battery and dropouts. An r/soundcore owner says a new pair lasted only about two to three hours, the case drained quickly, and the buds occasionally dropped their iPhone connection (r/soundcore thread). Another couldn’t get the touchscreen on the charging case to respond even after firmware updates (r/soundcore thread). Combined with Wirecutter’s battery note, test battery life in the first week.
  4. Sony XM6 fit and app frustrations. An r/SonyHeadphones owner upgrading from the XM5 says the XM6 never sealed properly, blocked less noise than the XM5 with noise cancelling off, and was even painful, despite spectacular sound (r/SonyHeadphones thread). Another describes the Sound Connect app lagging and losing track of the connection (r/SonyHeadphones thread).

Dud Alert: recalls to check

We searched all 3,733 CPSC recalls published since 2015 (via the CPSC Recalls API, data through October 29, 2026). None of our five picks has been recalled, and we found no earbud recalls from Apple, Anker/Soundcore, Sony or EarFun. Anker has recalled other battery products (listed below), so register your earbuds with the maker. The earbud and earphone recalls we found were all for overheating:

Black Friday: deal or dud?

Older earbud generations are often sold alongside the new ones, sometimes with similar names. Before you buy, confirm the generation (AirPods Pro 3, not Pro 2; WF-1000XM6, not XM5; Liberty 5 Pro, not Liberty 4 Pro), check the seller is the brand or Amazon, and look up the price history on a tracker such as camelcamelcamel. See all our Black Friday picks.

How we researched this guide

Sources used for this guide: Wirecutter’s wireless earbuds guide (updated September 11, 2026), AirPods Pro 3 review and 2026 Best New Picks list; a Wirecutter Show podcast episode’s show notes; SoundGuys’ wireless earbuds guide (updated September 11, 2026); NIDCD’s noise-induced hearing loss page; owner threads on r/airpods, r/soundcore and r/SonyHeadphones; CPSC Recalls API (3,733 recalls since 2015, searched Nov 2, 2026). Wirecutter blocks our page fetcher, so its findings come from the text of its pages as returned by web search on Nov 2, 2026. RTINGS’ earbud pages only returned titles to our fetcher, so we don’t cite them.

What we didn’t do: we did not use these earbuds ourselves, and we did not use Amazon customer reviews or ratings.

How picks were chosen: we favored earbuds that independent labs recommend after measured noise-cancelling, battery and microphone tests, then checked recalls and owner-reported fit and reliability problems. Full methodology

FAQ

What are the best wireless earbuds in 2026?

For iPhone owners, the Apple AirPods Pro 3, which both Wirecutter and SoundGuys recommend. For Android, Wirecutter’s top pick is the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro, and SoundGuys’ best overall is the Sony WF-1000XM6.

Are AirPods Pro 3 worth it on Android?

Usually not. Wirecutter suggests Android users consider alternatives such as the Sony LinkBuds Fit, and SoundGuys picks the AirPods Pro 3 specifically for iPhone owners.

Which earbuds stay in best for running and the gym?

Wirecutter’s workout pick is the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2, which SoundGuys also picks for workouts. For smaller ears, Wirecutter suggests earbuds with stabilizing wings such as the Sony LinkBuds Fit.

How loud is too loud with earbuds?

NIDCD says long or repeated exposure to sound at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss, while sound at or below 70 dBA is unlikely to. Noise cancelling helps you keep the volume down.

Have any wireless earbuds been recalled?

Yes, a few. DEWALT recalled about 301,800 Jobsite Pro wireless earphones in 2021 because they could overheat, and Audio-Technica recalled ATH-CK3TW charging cases the same year. We found no recalls of our picks as of November 2, 2026.

Earbuds or over-ear headphones as a gift?

Earbuds are better for workouts, commuting and pockets. Over-ear headphones are usually more comfortable for long flights. See our noise-cancelling headphones guide.
