| Gift | Why it’s a good gift | From our guide | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The upgrade they’ll notice every morning | Baratza Encore burr grinder | Wirecutter’s longtime top grinder; consistent grounds and parts sold by Baratza so it can be repaired | Best coffee grinders |
| For the pour-over fan | Cuisinart GK-1 gooseneck kettle | Wirecutter’s gooseneck pick for precise pouring and temperature | Best electric kettles |
| For the latte drinker | Instant MagicFroth 9-in-1 | Wirecutter’s top frother: heats and froths dairy and plant milk | Best milk frothers |
| Stocking stuffer | Zulay Kitchen Milk Boss | America’s Test Kitchen’s handheld frother winner | Best milk frothers |
| The big gift | Breville Bambino Plus | Serious Eats’ favorite espresso machine; automatic milk frothing | Best espresso machines for beginners |
| For the coffee nerd | Fellow Ode Gen 2 | Serious Eats’ most versatile grinder pick: flat burrs, quiet, anti-static | Best coffee grinders |
Bottom line: if you buy one coffee gift, make it a burr grinder. Fresh, evenly ground beans improve every brewing method, and the Baratza Encore is the grinder testers have trusted longest. Everything else on this list builds on that.
First, check their French press
On October 29, 2026, Bodum recalled about 5.9 million French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes, 8-cup and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya models, sold from 1974 through October 2026. CPSC says the carafe can break unexpectedly during use if the glass is damaged or cracked, including by stirring with a metal spoon, posing a risk of serious burns (CPSC recall). If the coffee lover in your life owns one, a replacement brewer or a good kettle and grinder is a timely gift. Don’t buy one of the recalled models as a gift; check the recall page for remedies.
Stocking stuffers and small gifts
Zulay Kitchen Milk Boss handheld frother
America’s Test Kitchen’s handheld winner makes strong hot and cold foam and is easy to clean; you heat the milk yourself (America’s Test Kitchen). Good for anyone who makes lattes, matcha or protein shakes. Full milk frother guide.
Instant MagicFroth 9-in-1
Wirecutter’s top frother heats and froths dairy and nondairy milks, makes cold foam and can melt chocolate for cocoa, with dishwasher-safe parts (Wirecutter). Some owners report units that stopped frothing, so keep the receipt. Full guide.
Mid-range gifts
Baratza Encore burr grinder
Wirecutter’s longtime top grinder for drip, pour-over, AeroPress and French press, and one you can repair with parts from Baratza. Not for espresso (Wirecutter). Owners report static and chaff in the bin. Full grinder guide.
OXO Brew Conical Burr Grinder
Serious Eats’ best grinder for most people and Wirecutter’s budget pick: easy to use, low static, big hopper, but less consistent than the Encore and harder to repair (Serious Eats). Full grinder guide.
Cuisinart GK-1 gooseneck kettle
Wirecutter’s pick for pour-over coffee and precise temperatures. Its beeps are loud and can’t be turned off (Wirecutter). Full kettle guide.
Cuisinart PerfecTemp CPK-17P1 kettle
Wirecutter’s top kettle since 2013, with six temperature presets for tea and French press (Wirecutter). Full kettle guide.
Big gifts
Breville Bambino Plus espresso machine
Serious Eats’ favorite espresso machine: it heats in about three seconds, holds temperature steadily and froths milk automatically. It needs a separate espresso-capable grinder, such as the Baratza Encore ESP (Serious Eats). Full espresso guide.
Fellow Ode Gen 2 grinder
Serious Eats’ most versatile pick for brewed coffee: flat burrs, anti-static design, quiet. It’s expensive, designed for brewed coffee rather than espresso, and can jam if the catch cup is misaligned. Full grinder guide.
Breville Milk Cafe
America’s Test Kitchen’s countertop frother winner: fully automatic, with adjustable temperature and cold-foam mode (America’s Test Kitchen).
Who should skip these gifts
If they drink pods or instant coffee and love it, a grinder or gooseneck kettle may gather dust. A frother is the safer bet. And don’t buy espresso gear for someone who hasn’t asked for it: it takes practice and counter space.
Dud Alert: recalls to check
We searched all 3,733 CPSC recalls published since 2015 (via the CPSC Recalls API, checked November 1, 2026). None of the gifts above has been recalled. Coffee-gear recalls to know about:
| Date | Recall | Hazard | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 29, 2026 | Bodum French presses with replaceable glass carafes (about 5.9 million) | Carafe can break during use: serious burns | CPSC recall |
| May 14, 2026 | ZWILLING Enfinigy electric kettles | Handle can loosen and separate | CPSC recall |
More espresso-machine recalls are listed in our espresso guide.
