How we researched this

We did not test these kettles in person. This guide combines results from independent testers (Wirecutter, which has tested kettles since 2013, and America’s Test Kitchen), the CPSC recall database and owner repair discussions. Every claim links to its source. Our full methodology. Researched and written by the Dudproof editors. Last updated November 1, 2026.

We publish a Dud Score only after its safety, failure-pattern and support inputs are sourced. Progress for each pick is in the Dud Score inputs table below. How the Dud Score works.

PickWhyWatch out for
Best for most peopleCuisinart CPK-17P1 PerfecTempWirecutter’s top pick since 2013: fast, accurate preset temperatures for tea and coffee, simple controlsOwners report base-contact and lid problems after years of use
Best budgetHamilton Beach 40880Wirecutter’s pick if you only need to boil waterNo temperature settings
Best for pour-over coffeeCuisinart GK-1 Digital GooseneckWirecutter’s gooseneck pick for precise pouring and temperature controlLoud beeps you can’t turn off; 5-degree steps
Best glass kettleOXO Brew Cordless GlassAmerica’s Test Kitchen’s winner: one of the fastest it tested, slow-open lid, comfy handleBoil-only; glass shows scale quickly

Bottom line: the Cuisinart PerfecTemp has survived more than a decade of Wirecutter retesting, and its temperature presets make better green tea, oolong and French press coffee than boiling everything. If you just want hot water fast and cheap, the Hamilton Beach 40880 does that. Pour-over people should get the Cuisinart GK-1 gooseneck, and if you want to see the water, ATK’s favorite is the OXO Brew Cordless Glass.

Where the testers agree — and where they don’t

Wirecutter’s pick has barely changed in 13 years. “Of all the models we’ve tested since 2013, the Cuisinart CPK-17P1 PerfecTemp Cordless Electric Kettle continues to be our favorite,” Wirecutter wrote in its March 2026 update, citing “speed, accuracy, and simple controls” at a better price than most competitors (Wirecutter). A separate Wirecutter review calls it its longtime favorite for making better tea (Wirecutter).

ATK prefers glass and doesn’t weigh temperature presets as heavily. America’s Test Kitchen says it prefers glass pitchers so you can see the water level, plus clearly lit indicators and comfortable handles. Its winner is the OXO Brew Cordless Glass (model 8710300), and its Best Buy is the Cosori Original Electric Glass Kettle (America’s Test Kitchen). Both are boil-only kettles, so the two labs are really answering different questions: Wirecutter asks “which kettle makes the best tea and coffee,” and ATK asks “which kettle is nicest to use for boiling water.”

Everyone agrees on gooseneck spouts for pour-over. Wirecutter recommends the Cuisinart GK-1 for pour-over coffee or precise temperature control (Wirecutter).

How to choose an electric kettle that won’t be a dud

  1. Do you need temperatures? Green and white teas and pour-over coffee taste better below boiling. If you only make instant noodles, pasta water and black tea, a boil-only kettle is fine.
  2. Spout shape. Standard spouts pour fast; gooseneck spouts pour slowly and precisely for pour-over, but take longer to fill a teapot.
  3. Glass vs. steel. Glass lets you watch the water and spot scale; steel hides scale and is harder to break.
  4. Lid design. ATK specifically praised the OXO’s slow-open lid because it prevents steam and splash burns. Several 2026 kettle recalls were for handles or lids that failed (see below), so a well-attached handle matters.
  5. Descale. Hard water leaves mineral scale. Owners in repair threads note that what looks like rust is often scale, which vinegar or a descaler removes.

Who each pick is for (and not for)

Cuisinart CPK-17P1 PerfecTemp — best for most people

  • For: tea drinkers, French press and Aeropress users, households that want one kettle for everything.
  • Not for: pour-over coffee perfectionists (use a gooseneck) or anyone who wants the cheapest boil.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter top pick since 2013, reliably boiled a full kettle in about seven minutes (Wirecutter).

Hamilton Beach 40880 — best budget

  • For: dorms, offices, first apartments and anyone who just wants water boiled.
  • Not for: tea or coffee drinkers who care about water temperature.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s budget pick for a basic boil-only kettle (Wirecutter).

Cuisinart GK-1 Digital Gooseneck — best for pour-over coffee

  • For: pour-over, Chemex and V60 brewers; pairs well with a burr grinder.
  • Not for: anyone bothered by beeps, or big households that need more than about a liter at a time.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s pick for pour-over and precise temperatures (Wirecutter).

OXO Brew Cordless Glass — best glass kettle

  • For: people who want to see the water, and kitchens where speed matters.
  • Not for: tea drinkers who need temperature presets.
  • Evidence: ATK winner; one of the quickest in its lineup; slow-open lid; removable spout filter for sediment (America’s Test Kitchen).

Who should skip it

If you drink one cup of tea a week and have a stovetop, a kettle is just clutter. And if you’re shopping for a coffee lover who already owns a kettle, a burr grinder improves their coffee more.

Owner Proof: common complaints and problems to know about

These come from owner repair forums and independent testers, not from Amazon reviews.

  1. Beeping and “empty” errors on the PerfecTemp. An r/fixit owner traced constant beeping and wrong readings on a CPK-17 to corroded contacts between the kettle and base, and reported that cleaning them fixed it (r/fixit thread). (Forum posts are anecdotes, not failure rates. See the Dud Score note below.)
  2. Dead units after years of use. Owners in an r/melbourne thread compare notes on CPK-17 kettles that stopped working (r/melbourne thread), and an r/fixit repair thread discusses a relay-driver fault on the multi-temperature version (r/fixit thread). Wirecutter reports a three-year warranty on the PerfecTemp, so register it.
  3. Lids that stick or won’t stay shut. Lid problems on the CPK-17 come up on repair sites (FixYa). Check the hinge when your kettle arrives and return it within the return window if it doesn’t latch firmly.
  4. Gooseneck beeps. Wirecutter notes the GK-1’s beeps are loud and can’t be turned off (Wirecutter).

Dud Alert: recalls to check

We searched all 3,733 CPSC recalls published since 2015 (via the CPSC Recalls API, checked November 1, 2026). None of our four picks has been recalled, and we found no kettle recalls from Cuisinart, Hamilton Beach or OXO. Recent electric and stovetop kettle recalls we found:

Black Friday: deal or dud?

The PerfecTemp is discounted often enough that paying full price is a dud move. Check its price history on a tracker such as camelcamelcamel before you buy, and compare the exact model number (CPK-17P1 is the current version; older listings say CPK-17). See all our Black Friday picks.

How we researched this guide

Sources used for this guide: Wirecutter’s electric kettle guide (updated March 19, 2026) and PerfecTemp review; America’s Test Kitchen’s electric kettle review; CPSC Recalls API (3,733 recalls since 2015, searched Nov 1, 2026); owner repair threads on Reddit and FixYa.

What we didn’t do: we did not use these kettles ourselves, and we did not use Amazon customer reviews or ratings.

How picks were chosen: we favored models picked by independent testers after side-by-side boiling and temperature tests, then checked for recalls and owner-reported failure patterns. Full methodology

FAQ

What is the best electric kettle in 2026?

For most people, the Cuisinart CPK-17P1 PerfecTemp, Wirecutter’s top pick since 2013 for its speed, accurate temperature presets and simple controls.

Is a variable-temperature kettle worth it?

If you drink green, white or oolong tea, or brew pour-over coffee, yes: those taste better below boiling. For black tea, instant coffee and cooking, a boil-only kettle such as the Hamilton Beach 40880 is enough.

Glass or stainless steel kettle?

America’s Test Kitchen prefers glass so you can see the water level; its winner is the OXO Brew Cordless Glass. Steel hides scale and is harder to break. Both work.

Why does my Cuisinart kettle keep beeping?

One owner on r/fixit fixed constant beeping and false empty readings by cleaning corroded contacts on the kettle and base. If that doesn’t help, contact Cuisinart under warranty.

Have any electric kettles been recalled?

Yes. ZWILLING recalled Enfinigy electric kettles in May 2026 because the handle can separate, and KitchenAid electric kettles were recalled in 2018. We found no recalls of our picks as of November 1, 2026.

What goes well with a kettle as a gift?

A burr coffee grinder or a milk frother. See our gifts for coffee lovers.
