How we researched this

We did not test these heaters in person. This guide combines results from independent testers (Wirecutter, which says it has researched more than 100 models and tested more than 80 since 2011, plus Consumer Reports and WIRED), CPSC safety guidance, the full CPSC recall database and owner discussions. Every claim links to its source. Our full methodology. Researched and written by the Dudproof editors. Last updated November 1, 2026.

Dud Score

Coming soon

We publish a Dud Score only after its safety, failure-pattern and support inputs are sourced. Progress for each pick is in the Dud Score inputs table below. How the Dud Score works.

PickWhyWatch out for
Best for most peopleVornado VH240 (or VH200)Wirecutter’s top pick has been the VH200 since 2018; the VH240 is its quieter successor with the same safety features and a 5-year warrantyNo remote, timer or oscillation; the VH200 is discontinued, so stock is shifting
Best budget / deskLasko 754200Wirecutter’s budget pick: small, cheap and quick to warm a desk or small roomNo tip-over switch, so it must sit on a stable, flat surface
Best for bathroomsDreo DR-HSH004AWirecutter’s bathroom pick: ALCI safety plug, tip-over and overheat protection, remoteStill keep it well away from water; this is not the Dreo model recalled on Oct 29, 2026

Bottom line: buy the Vornado VH240, or a VH200 if you find one. Wirecutter says either is fine during the changeover. For a desk or tiny room on a budget, the Lasko 754200 works if you can keep it stable. For a bathroom, the Dreo DR-HSH004A has the protective plug you want. Whichever you pick, the CPSC safety rules below matter more than the model: plug it straight into the wall, keep three feet of clearance and turn it off when you leave or sleep.

Where the testers agree — and where they don’t

Wirecutter has backed the same design for years. “The Vornado VH200 offers the best combination of power, comfort, and quietness. It heats a room faster and more evenly than other models we tested,” Wirecutter says, and it has been the top pick since 2018 (Wirecutter). Vornado now lists the VH200 as discontinued and points buyers to the VH240 (Vornado). Wirecutter reports the VH240 is about 4 dB quieter and heated its test room faster, with the same simple controls and safety features, and advises buying whichever is available.

WIRED and Consumer Reports pick different heaters. WIRED’s favorite is the Dreo Whole Room Heater 714, praised for a thermostat that actually holds temperature and for staying cool to the touch; it also likes Vornado’s TAVH10 for very quiet, even heat (WIRED). Consumer Reports’ lab ranks the Lasko Artisan Series CX16550 at the top, with the Comfort Zone CZ499R as a budget option and Vornado models strong for spot heating (Consumer Reports). The common thread: a fan-forced heater with a thermostat, tip-over switch and overheat protection.

They agree that safety features aren’t optional. Every mainstream pick has overheat protection. The one exception worth noting is the Lasko 754200: it’s cheap and effective, but it has no tip-over switch, so it belongs on a desk or table where it can’t be knocked over.

The safety rules that matter more than the model

Portable heaters cause an estimated 1,600 fires a year, with about 70 deaths and 150 injuries, according to CPSC data for 2020–2022 (CPSC). CPSC’s advice:

  1. Plug it directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip.
  2. Keep three feet of clearance from anything that can burn: bedding, curtains, furniture, paper and clothes.
  3. Turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep. Don’t leave it running unattended.
  4. Feel the plug and outlet. If the plug, cord, outlet or faceplate gets hot, stop using the heater and have an electrician check the outlet.
  5. Bathrooms need extra care. Consumer Reports explains when a heater is and isn’t safe to use in a bathroom (Consumer Reports). Dreo’s manual for the DR-HSH004A still says to keep it away from water.

CPSC’s long-standing fire-hazard guide for portable electric heaters has more detail (CPSC Publication 098).

Who each pick is for (and not for)

Vornado VH240 or VH200 — best for most people

  • For: bedrooms, home offices and living rooms up to about 250 square feet (Vornado’s rating for the VH240), and anyone who wants quiet, even heat.
  • Not for: people who want a remote, a timer or app control.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter top pick (VH200) since 2018 and pick for its successor (VH240) (Wirecutter); VH240 specs and warranty from Vornado.

Lasko 754200 — best budget

  • For: a desk, a cold corner, a dorm room, under-$50 gifts.
  • Not for: homes with pets or kids who could knock it over, or rooms where it would sit on carpet.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter budget pick (Wirecutter); 1,500/900 W settings, thermostat and overheat protection from Lasko; see also Tom’s Guide’s review.

Dreo DR-HSH004A — best for bathrooms

  • For: chilly bathrooms and small bedrooms, people who want a remote and timer.
  • Not for: splash zones; keep it away from the tub, shower and sink.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s bathroom pick, with an ALCI plug, overheat and tip-over protection and a remote (Wirecutter).

Who should skip it

If you’re trying to heat a whole house or a cold basement, a space heater is the wrong tool: it’s expensive to run at 1,500 watts and won’t keep up. Fix drafts, or talk to an HVAC pro. And if your only outlet is on a shared power strip or extension cord, don’t buy one until you can plug it straight into the wall.

Owner Proof: common complaints and problems to know about

These come from owner forums, manuals and independent testers, not from Amazon reviews.

  1. Clicking on the Vornado. Owners notice clicks as the mechanical thermostat switches the element on and off. Vornado’s manual describes this thermostat cycling as normal (VH200 manual). (Forum posts are anecdotes, not failure rates. See the Dud Score note below.)
  2. Stuck power switches. An r/appliancerepair owner reported a VH200 power switch that seemed jammed (r/appliancerepair thread). If yours misbehaves, stop using it and contact Vornado under warranty rather than opening it up.
  3. No smart controls. Vornado’s simple dials mean owners who want automation look for workarounds (r/homeautomation thread). Be careful: putting a 1,500 W heater on a smart plug only makes sense if the plug is rated for the load, and CPSC says to plug heaters directly into the wall.
  4. Unreliable thermostats on cheap heaters. WIRED notes that a thermostat that actually works is “a strangely rare quality among space heaters” (WIRED). That’s a big reason to stick with tested models.

Dud Alert: recalls to check

We searched all 3,733 CPSC recalls published since 2015 (via the CPSC Recalls API, checked November 1, 2026). None of our picks has been recalled. But two brands in this guide have recalled other heaters, including one recall announced three days ago. If you own any of these, check the model and date code now:

Why we still pick Vornado: the recalls above cover different models, and the VH200 and VH240 have no recalls in the CPSC database. But Vornado’s history is exactly why we’ll keep re-checking. Register your heater with the maker so you hear about recalls directly.

Black Friday: deal or dud?

Space heaters sell out when the first cold snap hits, so early November is a better time to buy than a frigid January. Compare the price history on a tracker such as camelcamelcamel, and make sure the listing says VH240 or VH200 exactly; Vornado sells many look-alike models. See all our Black Friday picks.

How we researched this guide

Sources used for this guide: Wirecutter’s space heater guide (updated October 2026); Consumer Reports’ space heater ratings and bathroom-safety article; WIRED’s space heater tests; Tom’s Guide’s Lasko 754200 review; Vornado, Lasko and Dreo product pages and manuals; CPSC winter safety release and Publication 098; CPSC Recalls API (3,733 recalls since 2015, searched Nov 1, 2026); owner forum threads.

What we didn’t do: we did not run these heaters ourselves, and we did not use Amazon customer reviews or ratings.

How picks were chosen: we required overheat protection and favored tip-over switches, picked models independent testers chose after side-by-side heating tests, then checked every model and brand against the CPSC recall database. Full methodology

FAQ

What is the safest space heater to buy?

Look for overheat protection, a tip-over switch and a safety certification, and buy a model independent testers picked. Our pick is the Vornado VH240 (or VH200). Then follow CPSC’s rules: plug it directly into a wall outlet and keep three feet of clearance.

Can I plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip?

No. CPSC says to plug electric heaters directly into a wall outlet and never use an extension cord or power strip.

Is it safe to leave a space heater on overnight?

CPSC advises turning heaters off when you go to sleep or leave the room.

Which Dreo heater was recalled?

On October 29, 2026, Dreo recalled about 338,800 DR-HSH015 space heaters made from April 2025 through January 2026, because they can overheat and ignite. Our bathroom pick, the DR-HSH004A, is a different model and was not part of that recall.

Is the Vornado VH200 discontinued?

Vornado lists the VH200 as discontinued and points buyers to the VH240. Wirecutter says the VH240 is quieter and heated its test room faster, and recommends buying whichever is available.

Does a space heater help with dry winter air?

No. Heat can make indoor air feel drier. Pair it with a humidifier, and see our heated blankets guide for a cheaper way to stay warm.
