How we researched this
We did not test these blankets in person. This guide combines Wirecutter’s heated-blanket tests, safety guidance from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), the full CPSC recall database and owner discussions. Every claim links to its source. Our full methodology. Researched and written by the Dudproof editors. Last updated November 1, 2026.

Dud Score
Coming soon
We publish a Dud Score only after its safety, failure-pattern and support inputs are sourced. Progress for each pick is in the Dud Score inputs table below. How the Dud Score works.
| Pick | Why | Watch out for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best heated throw | Beautyrest Zuri Oversized Heated Faux Fur Throw | Wirecutter’s top heated throw: lightweight, heats evenly, lots of patterns, five-year warranty | Faux fur sheds and mats if you ignore the care label |
| Best value / bed sizes | Westinghouse Electric Blanket | Wirecutter’s value pick: 10 heat levels, timer up to 12 hours, sizes from throw to king | The throw-size Westinghouse listings we found had fewer heat levels; check the size you buy |
| Upgrade | Brookstone Heated Luxe Faux Fur Throw | Wirecutter’s plush pick, with four heat levels and a discreet built-in control | Costs over $200 (per Wirecutter); fixed four-hour auto-off |
Bottom line: for the couch, the Beautyrest Zuri throw is the one testers recommend, and its five-year warranty is unusually long for a heated product. For a bed, the Westinghouse blanket gives you more heat levels and a longer timer. The Brookstone Luxe is the splurge gift. The biggest risk in this category isn’t picking the wrong brand: it’s cheap no-name blankets, several of which were recalled for fire hazards in 2025 and 2026.

What testers found
Wirecutter’s guide picks the Beautyrest Zuri as its top heated throw because it’s lightweight, heats evenly, comes in many patterns and carries a five-year warranty. For a more luxurious feel it recommends the Brookstone Heated Luxe, noting the higher price and fixed four-hour shutoff, and for value and versatility the Westinghouse Electric Blanket, with 10 heat levels, a timer of up to 12 hours and sizes from throw to king (Wirecutter).
Consumer Reports, WIRED, Business Insider and Good Housekeeping also publish heated-blanket tests if you want more opinions (Consumer Reports; WIRED; Business Insider; Good Housekeeping). We built our picks on Wirecutter’s because its guide explains the trade-offs for each one.
Heated blanket safety rules
These come from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI: heating pads and electric blankets; ESFI: electric blanket fire prevention):
- Keep it flat. Don’t use a heated blanket folded, bunched or tucked under a mattress, and don’t put heavy things on top of it. Trapped heat is what causes overheating.
- Retire old or damaged blankets. Replace a blanket that’s more than 10 years old, or right away if you see scorch marks, frayed fabric, exposed wires or a damaged cord.
- No extension cords or power strips.
- Don’t use one with infants, or with anyone who can’t easily operate the controls or feel heat.
- Store it loosely rolled, not tightly folded, so the wires don’t kink.
How to choose a heated blanket that won’t be a dud
- Buy from a brand with a recall-free record and a real warranty. Every heated-blanket recall in the last two years that we found involved brands sold mostly online for low prices (see Dud Alert below).
- Look for auto-off. All three picks shut off on their own. Choose a longer adjustable timer for a bed, and a shorter one for the couch.
- Throw or bed size? Throws are for the couch and desk; full bed-size blankets need dual controls if two people share a bed.
- Washability. Detach the controller and follow the label exactly. Most damage comes from washing and drying too hot.
- Check for a safety certification mark (UL or ETL) on the label and the listing.
Who each pick is for (and not for)
Beautyrest Zuri Oversized Heated Throw — best heated throw
- For: couch nappers, cold home offices, a safe-bet gift for parents and grandparents.
- Not for: people who dislike faux fur, or anyone who wants a full bed-size blanket.
- Evidence: Wirecutter’s top heated throw, with a five-year warranty (Wirecutter).
Westinghouse Electric Blanket — best value and for beds
- For: bedrooms, couples (in bed sizes), people who want a long timer and fine heat control.
- Not for: buyers who want a luxe faux-fur feel.
- Evidence: Wirecutter’s value pick with 10 heat levels and a timer up to 12 hours (Wirecutter). The 50 x 60-inch Westinghouse throws we saw on Amazon listed fewer heat levels than the bed sizes, so check the listing.
Brookstone Heated Luxe Faux Fur Throw — upgrade
- For: the splurge gift; people who want the plushest feel and a hidden control.
- Not for: anyone who wants to set their own shutoff time.
- Evidence: Wirecutter’s plush pick, with four heat levels and a fixed four-hour auto-off (Wirecutter).
Who should skip it
Skip heated blankets for babies and toddlers, for anyone who can’t easily turn the controls off or feel heat, and for pets’ beds. If you run hot at night, a weighted blanket made from breathable knit may suit you better.
Owner Proof: common complaints and problems to know about
These come from owner discussions and maker support pages, not from Amazon reviews.
- “It stopped heating.” Beautyrest’s help center advises unplugging, switching the controller off, waiting 15 minutes and trying again, and says warranty claims go through its licensee JLA Home with the model number and receipt (Beautyrest help). (Forum posts are anecdotes, not failure rates. See the Dud Score note below.)
- Lost or broken controllers. Owners hunt for replacement cords and controllers, which are model-specific (r/HelpMeFind thread). Keep the controller with the blanket, and never use one from a different model.
- Cheap throws disappoint. An r/aldi thread collects complaints about a budget heated throw that didn’t get warm enough (r/aldi thread).
- They’re a money-saver for some. Owners in r/Frugal describe using heated blankets so they can keep the thermostat lower (r/Frugal thread).
Dud Alert: recalls to check
We searched all 3,733 CPSC recalls published since 2015 (via the CPSC Recalls API, checked November 1, 2026). We found no recalls of Beautyrest, Westinghouse or Brookstone heated blankets. Heated blankets and throws that were recalled:

| Nov 12, 2020 | InvoSpa heated blankets (sold on Amazon) | Fire and burn hazards | CPSC recall |
Black Friday: deal or dud?
Heated throws are heavily discounted from November through January, and the cheapest listings are exactly where the recent recalls cluster. A deal on a recalled no-name brand is a dud. Check price history on a tracker such as camelcamelcamel for our picks instead. See all our Black Friday picks.

How we researched this guide
Sources used for this guide: Wirecutter’s electric blanket guide (2026); ESFI heated-blanket safety guidance; Beautyrest’s support center; CPSC Recalls API (3,733 recalls since 2015, searched Nov 1, 2026); owner discussions on Reddit. Consumer Reports, WIRED, Business Insider and Good Housekeeping guides are linked for comparison.
What we didn’t do: we did not use these blankets ourselves, and we did not use Amazon customer reviews or ratings.
How picks were chosen: we used Wirecutter’s tested picks, then checked each brand against the CPSC recall database and looked for warranty and support records. Full methodology
FAQ
What is the best heated throw blanket?
Wirecutter’s top heated throw is the Beautyrest Zuri Oversized Heated Faux Fur Throw: lightweight, evenly heated and backed by a five-year warranty.
Are heated blankets safe?
Modern certified blankets with auto-off are designed for home use, but ESFI says to keep them flat, never fold or tuck them, avoid extension cords and replace any blanket older than 10 years or showing damage. Several cheap brands were recalled for fire hazards in 2025 and 2026.
Which heated blankets were recalled in 2026?
JKMAX heated blankets and heating pads (September 2026) and OCTROT heated sherpa throws and blankets (July 2026), both sold on Amazon. Check the CPSC links above for model details and remedies.
Can you sleep with a heated blanket on all night?
ESFI advises against leaving a heated blanket on unattended or while sleeping unless it’s designed for it. A bed blanket with a timer, like the Westinghouse, lets you warm the bed and let it shut itself off.
Is a heated blanket cheaper than a space heater?
It warms you rather than the whole room, so many people use one to keep the thermostat lower, as owners in r/Frugal describe. If you need to warm a room, see our space heater guide.
Can you wash a heated blanket?
Many can be machine washed once the controller is detached, but follow the care label exactly. Washing or drying too hot can damage the wires.
