How we researched this

We did not test these air purifiers in person. This guide combines measured results from independent testers (Wirecutter and HouseFresh), ENERGY STAR certification data, manufacturer specifications, U.S. electricity prices from the EIA, CPSC recall records and owner discussions. Every number links to its source, and the cost math is shown. Our full methodology. Researched and written by the Dudproof editors. Last updated November 1, 2026.

Bottom line: for one bedroom or living room up to about 350 sq ft, buy the Coway Mighty2. If you want app control and the most transparent certification data, choose the Levoit Core 400S.

What it really costs to run

Electricity math uses the U.S. average residential price of 18.16¢/kWh (EIA, August 2026). Formula: watts × 24 h × 365 ÷ 1,000 × $0.1816.

Worst case: top speed 24/7Typical (ENERGY STAR annual estimate)Filters per year
Coway Mighty256 W → 491 kWh → $89Not certified — n/aNot priced yet (1 filter set per year)
Coway Mighty77 W → 675 kWh → $122Not certified — n/aNot priced yet (HEPA yearly + carbon every 6 months)
Levoit Core 400S39.6 W → 347 kWh → $63237 kWh → $43$99.98 (2 × $49.99, HouseFresh)

Most people run purifiers on auto or a low speed most of the time, so real bills are usually far below the worst case. HouseFresh measured just 3.7 W on the Mighty’s lowest speed and 5.3 W on the Core 400S’s lowest speed.

Who each pick is for (and not for)

Coway Airmega Mighty2 (AP-1512N) — best for most rooms

  • For: bedrooms and living rooms up to about 350 sq ft; allergy and wildfire-smoke season.
  • Not for: large open-plan spaces (look at bigger models), or anyone who wants years of owner track record before buying.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s 2026 top pick, replacing the original Mighty (Wirecutter).
  • Note on room-size claims: Coway advertises “1,800 sq ft in 60 minutes” — that’s one air change per hour. For allergies and smoke, aim for about 5 air changes per hour, which is roughly 350–370 sq ft for this CADR.

Coway Airmega Mighty (AP-1512HH) — proven classic

  • For: buyers who want the design with the longest independent test record (a Wirecutter pick from 2015 to 2026).
  • Not for: anyone who wants zero ionizer or ozone (switch the ionizer off, or choose the Core 400S).
  • Availability: may be harder to find as Coway shifts to the Mighty2.

Levoit Core 400S — best with smart features

  • For: app and voice control, rooms up to about 360 sq ft, people who want ENERGY STAR-certified numbers.
  • Not for: people who want a separate washable pre-filter (HouseFresh suggests the Levoit Vital 200S for that).
  • Also know: HouseFresh reports Levoit removed “HEPA H13” from its marketing after a Dyson complaint to the BBB, and found the European version slower than the U.S. version.

Owner Proof: common complaints and problems to know about

  1. Ionizers and ozone. The original Coway Mighty includes an ionizer; HouseFresh measured 9 ppb ozone with it on and notes Coway’s reported CADR uses the ionizer. Owners debate this on r/AirPurifiers. You can switch it off; HouseFresh’s test took 29 instead of 26 minutes with it off.
  2. Filter costs add up. The Core 400S filter costs $49.99 and HouseFresh recommends replacing it every 6 months. Owners running purifiers 24/7 ask how long filters really last (thread).
  3. Bonded filters (Levoit Core). The pre-filter is attached to the main filter, so you remove the whole filter to clean it (HouseFresh).
  4. Room-size marketing. Brands quote huge room sizes based on 1 air change per hour. Use the CADR × 1.55 rule instead (from AHAM’s two-thirds rule).
  5. Noise at top speed. All three exceed 50 dBA on max; HouseFresh measured about 60 dBA at 3 ft on the Mighty and Core 400S.

Dud Alert: recalls to check

We searched all 3,733 CPSC recalls since 2015 (CPSC Recalls API, checked November 1, 2026). No recalls were found for Coway or Levoit air purifiers. Recent air purifier recall: about 191,390 Aroeve MK04 purifiers (February 2026) for overheating — 37 reports, including 1 fire (CPSC).

How we researched this guide

Sources used: Wirecutter (2026 air purifier guide), HouseFresh (measured particle removal, noise and wattage), ENERGY STAR certified room air cleaner data (V3.0, downloaded Nov 1, 2026), Coway product specifications, EIA electricity prices, CPSC Recalls API, r/AirPurifiers discussions.

What we didn’t do: we did not run these purifiers ourselves, and we did not use Amazon customer reviews or ratings.

FAQ

What is the best air purifier in 2026?

For most rooms up to about 350 sq ft, the Coway Airmega Mighty2 (AP-1512N), Wirecutter’s 2026 top pick. The Levoit Core 400S is the best choice if you want app control and ENERGY STAR certification.

What size air purifier do I need?

Multiply your room’s square footage by about 0.65 to get the minimum smoke CADR (or divide the smoke CADR by 0.65 — roughly × 1.55 — to get the room size) for about 5 air changes per hour with 8-foot ceilings. A smoke CADR of about 230–240 suits rooms up to about 360 sq ft.

How much does it cost to run an air purifier?

At the 2026 U.S. average of about 18¢/kWh, running the Levoit Core 400S at top speed 24/7 costs about $63 a year in electricity, and the Coway Mighty2 about $89. Filters add more: about $100 a year for the Core 400S (HouseFresh).

Do air purifiers produce ozone?

Filter-only purifiers don’t. Models with ionizers can produce small amounts: HouseFresh measured 9 ppb from the Coway Mighty with its ionizer on. ENERGY STAR lists the Levoit Core 400S at 0 ppb.

Is the Coway Mighty2 better than the original Coway Mighty?

Wirecutter made the Mighty2 its 2026 top pick, replacing the original. Coway rates the Mighty2 at 56 W versus 77 W for the original, with similar CADR (240 vs 233 for smoke).

Have any air purifiers been recalled?

Yes. About 191,390 Aroeve MK04 purifiers were recalled in February 2026 for overheating. We found no CPSC recalls for Coway or Levoit purifiers as of November 1, 2026.
