How we researched this

We did not test these vacuums in person. This guide combines results from independent testers (Wirecutter, RTINGS, WIRED and TechRadar), U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall records, manufacturer support documents and owner reports of problems on public forums. Every claim links to its source. Our full methodology. Researched and written by the Dudproof editors. Last updated November 1, 2026.

PickWhyWatch out for
Best for most peopleDyson V10 KonicalWirecutter’s top pick: light, quiet, a nearly tangle-free conical brush roll, large bin, about 40 minutes of runtime in its test, 2-year warrantyNew 2026 model with a short track record; only two attachments; no screen showing battery left
Strongest pickupShark PowerDetect Cordless Stick (IP1251)Wirecutter’s runner-up for the strongest pickup; WIRED’s reviewer still prefers it over the V10 KonicalHeavier (8 lb in Wirecutter’s test) and louder
BudgetTineco GO PetWirecutter’s budget pick: 6 lb, about 30 minutes on auto modeCan seize up on medium- and high-pile carpet
Upgrade for carpet-heavy homesDyson V15 DetectTop of RTINGS’ 2026 cordless list; RTINGS says it has the edge on carpetCosts more; WIRED’s reviewer scored the cheaper V10 Konical higher overall

Bottom line: the Dyson V10 Konical is the testers’ best balance of weight, noise, cleaning and warranty. If raw pickup matters more than weight and noise, the Shark PowerDetect is the stronger cleaner. For mostly hard floors on a budget, the Tineco GO Pet does the job. Skip it if you have plush carpet.

Where the testers agree — and where they don’t

They agree you don’t need the most expensive Dyson. Wirecutter’s top pick is the V10 Konical, not a flagship (Wirecutter). WIRED’s July 2026 review says the same thing from a different angle. The V10 Konical has 150 air watts against the V15 Detect’s 240, yet in WIRED’s five-test scoring (sand, cat litter, cereal, general vacuuming and handheld mode) it scored 14 out of 20 to the V15’s 12. It also beat the V15 and Dyson’s other new models at picking up sand from a rug (WIRED).

They disagree on Dyson versus Shark. Wirecutter ranks the Dyson first and the Shark PowerDetect second, crediting the Shark with the strongest pickup but marking it down for weight and noise. WIRED’s reviewer liked the V10 Konical but wrote that they “still wouldn’t call it better than the Shark PowerDetect” (WIRED). RTINGS, which tests 100-plus models in a standardized lab, puts the Dyson V15 Detect first and the Shark Stratos second, saying the V15 has the edge on carpet while the Stratos’s bendable wand helps maneuverability (RTINGS cordless; RTINGS stick). The pattern: Shark wins on brute pickup, Dyson wins on weight, noise and the warranty Wirecutter cites.

Runtime claims vary a lot by mode. TechRadar measured 67 minutes from the Shark PowerDetect in Eco mode but only 14 minutes in Boost, and Eco can’t be used on carpet (TechRadar). Treat any “60-minute” headline as a best case on the lowest setting.

Who each pick is for (and not for)

Dyson V10 Konical — best for most people

  • For: most homes, especially those with long hair or pets (the conical head is designed to shed hair instead of wrapping it), carpets and rugs, and allergy-conscious households that want sealed HEPA filtration.
  • Not for: people who want a soft-roller hard-floor head or a wet-cleaning head (WIRED notes neither is offered), or who want a screen showing exact battery time.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s top pick for being light, quiet and nearly tangle-free, with a large bin, about 40 minutes of tested runtime and a 2-year warranty (Wirecutter). WIRED gave it 7/10 and scored it above the V15 Detect (WIRED).

Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick (IP1251) — strongest pickup

  • For: heavy-shedding pets, high-traffic carpet, and people who prioritize cleaning power over weight.
  • Not for: anyone who finds 8 lb tiring to carry up stairs, or who is sensitive to noise.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s runner-up with the strongest pickup and about 40 minutes in Detect mode (Wirecutter); WIRED’s reviewer prefers it overall (WIRED).

Tineco GO Pet — budget

  • For: apartments with hard floors and low-pile rugs, quick daily pickups and second-floor backup vacuums.
  • Not for: medium- or high-pile carpet, where Wirecutter found it can seize up.
  • Evidence: Wirecutter’s budget pick at 6 lb, with about 30 minutes on auto and nearly 40 on low (Wirecutter).

Dyson V15 Detect — upgrade for carpet-heavy homes

  • For: larger, carpet-heavy homes where RTINGS’ lab results on carpet matter more than price.
  • Not for: most people. WIRED’s reviewer scored the cheaper V10 Konical higher in their tests.
  • Evidence: first on RTINGS’ 2026 cordless list (RTINGS).

Owner Proof: common complaints and problems to know about

These come from independent testers, manufacturer support pages and owner forums, not from Amazon reviews.

  1. Triggers and batteries are the usual failure points. On earlier Dyson V10 models, owners describe the trigger mechanism failing so the vacuum won’t start or keeps cutting out. One owner documented replacing a V10 trigger, and others discuss it on r/dyson (thread). Other threads describe a V10 dying and a Dyson that died after a minute of use, symptoms often traced to a worn battery. These threads concern older V10 models, not necessarily the 2026 Konical. We’ll watch whether the pattern repeats. (Threads are anecdotes, not failure rates. See the Dud Score note below.)
  2. Shut-offs are often clogs or overheating, not a dead vacuum. A Shark PowerDetect owner described the vacuum running briefly, then shutting off with flashing icons. Shark’s PowerDetect manual covers clearing blockages and cleaning filters. Check those before you file a warranty claim.
  3. Customer service experiences vary. One long r/dyson post describes an owner losing faith in the brand after quality and service problems. Keep your receipt and register the vacuum so the warranty is easy to claim.
  4. Reliability questions are common. Shoppers comparing Dyson and Shark ask on r/VacuumCleaners which is most reliable. No source we found has published long-term failure rates by brand, which is exactly the gap our Dud Score is meant to fill.

Dud Alert: recalls to check

We searched all 3,733 CPSC recalls published since 2015 (via the CPSC Recalls API, checked November 1, 2026). None of our four picks has been recalled. Apart from a 2015 Euro-Pro (Shark) recall, we found no Dyson, Shark or Tineco stick vacuum recalls. Cordless vacuum recalls to know about, especially if you’re buying used:

Lithium-ion battery packs are the common thread. Use only the maker’s charger and batteries, and don’t buy no-name replacement packs.

How we researched this guide

Sources used for this guide: Wirecutter’s cordless stick vacuum guide (2026), RTINGS cordless and stick vacuum rankings (2026), WIRED’s Dyson V10 Konical review (July 2026), TechRadar’s Shark PowerDetect review; CPSC Recalls API (3,733 recalls since 2015, searched Nov 1, 2026); Shark’s PowerDetect manual; owner threads on r/dyson and r/VacuumCleaners.

What we didn’t do: we did not vacuum with these models ourselves, and we did not use Amazon customer reviews or ratings.

How picks were chosen: we favored current models picked by more than one independent tester, then checked for recalls, known failure modes and warranty terms. Full methodology

FAQ

What is the best cordless stick vacuum in 2026?

For most people, the Dyson V10 Konical, Wirecutter’s top pick for being light, quiet and nearly tangle-free, with a 2-year warranty. If you want the strongest pickup and don’t mind extra weight and noise, choose the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick.

Dyson or Shark: which is better?

Testers split. Wirecutter ranks the Dyson V10 Konical first and the Shark PowerDetect second for its strongest pickup. WIRED’s reviewer preferred the Shark. RTINGS ranks the Dyson V15 Detect first and the Shark Stratos second. Shark tends to win on power; Dyson on weight and noise.

How long do cordless vacuum batteries really last per charge?

It depends heavily on the mode. Wirecutter measured about 40 minutes from both the Dyson V10 Konical and the Shark PowerDetect in normal use, while TechRadar measured the Shark at 67 minutes in Eco and 14 minutes in Boost.

Have any cordless vacuums been recalled?

Yes. Rowenta cordless vacuums were recalled in July 2026 for fire and burn hazards, and BISSELL MultiReach and BISSELL cordless wet/dry vacuums were recalled for fire hazards in 2023 and 2024. None of our picks has been recalled as of November 1, 2026.

Can a cordless stick vacuum replace a corded vacuum?

For most apartments and small homes, yes. Large, carpet-heavy homes may want a higher-powered model like the Dyson V15 Detect, which RTINGS says has the edge on carpet, or a spare battery.

Should I get a robot vacuum instead?

A robot handles daily upkeep and a stick handles stairs, spills and deep cleaning, so many homes use both. See our best robot vacuums guide.
